This is just the beginning of the health insurance company’s hissy fits you mean, believe me, if there was money to be had in Texas, they would still be here to get it. Fact is, we have good competition here, i see Blue Cross Blue Shield has no problem picking up the slack. I seriously think this is a move by several companies to gain more of a monopoly in the states, am sure they traded BCBS for this state, and Uni care will now have all of BCBS business in another state(s)..hide and watch, they aren’t going to give up this money horse without a good fight.

I am in complete agreement with you that the demise of Unicare in Texas is reflective of what we have to look forward to if the Federal Goverment competes in the health care market.

So far as the groups currently with Unicare, there is at least one alternative to the automatic transfer to BC/BS. An agent who has five or more groups with Unicare has the option of receiving block underwriting on those cases from an A rated carrier.

Without government mandates the availability of maternity insurance evaporates. You have really described this well, in a way that not just your fellow insurance agents can understand, but also in a way that the average consumer can understand.

Insurance companies simply cannot make a profit on dental insurance or maternity insurance the same way that they make money on other types of insurance, because the consumer has too much control over whether or not they will use the coverage.

In Connecticut we have two carriers that offer maternity insurance. These two carriers offer only 3 policies between them with the benefit. I wouldn’t be surprised if those policies were taken off the market in the next year.
